We’re carrying our genes around with us.
In this bag, in this boat,
In this life that’s been lent.

There’s a miser in a Snapback.
There’s Whistler’s shadow on bricks and mortar,
Next to a taxidermy harlequin.

They keep the embers in the hearth lit,
Coursing with breath.
Invisible bellows,
Like the gusts of a hand-tarsus,
In autonomic response.

Metrics, like fairy tales, are just
Accretions and erosions.
Life uncounted, they say.
The units assembling,
Tumbling rocks at a pebble beach
Washed by the tides.

There’s an old etching
Above the mantelpiece.
A grandfather clock clicking rhythms,
Coursing with hemolymph.
Can you tell if we’re inside or outside?

They say in every picture there’s a cave painting.
Realign your atoms
And you can walk through walls.
